Fog sealing rejuvenates the asphalt surface, seals small cracks, reduces raveling (loss of aggregate), and provides a waterproof layer.
It helps extend the life of the pavement and improves its appearance. Fog Sealing also gives the surface a black appearance which is often requested by the customer and public.
Fog Coating is an application of a diluted asphalt emulsion to an aged (oxidized) pavement surface. Fog Coats are a standalone low-cost pavement preservation applications used to rejuvenate asphalt surfaces, seal small cracks and inhibit raveling. Fog Coats are commonly used on older asphaltic roads and cold mix pavements.
ADvantages:
- 2 to 4 years of life extension depending on the existing conditions
Issues Addressed
- Minor surface cracks
Fog seal treatments can help seal and fill in minor surface cracks on the pavement. The asphalt emulsion penetrates the cracks, sealing them and preventing water from getting in. Water can cause further damage through freeze-thaw cycles.
- Oxidation
Over time, exposure to sunlight and oxygen can cause the asphalt binder in pavement to oxidize, resulting in pavement aging and brittleness. Fog seal acts as a protective barrier, shielding the pavement from the harmful effects of UV rays and oxidation.
- Raveling (due to segregation or poor compaction)
Fog seals can help bind loose aggregate particles and improve the bond between the aggregate and the asphalt binder. The emulsion in the fog seal fills the spaces and reinforces the surface. It reduces the risk of more raveling.
Attributes
- Protects the pavement structure from moisture intrusion and oxidation
- Improves pavement life and may delay the need for major maintenance or rehabilation
- Improves road safety by enhancing color contrast between pavement surface and road markings
Common Combinations
- Chip seal + Fog seal
- Full Depth Reclamation + Fog Seal
- Cold In Place Recycling + Fog Seal

Applications
Western Asphalt Products have a variety of applications
Seal Coats are treatments that provide effective pavement maintenance to all structurally sound roadways.
CA-90 is a specially formulated cold pour rubberized crack filler.
Microsurfacing is a thin cold-mix overlay used in the repair and preventative maintenance of roadways.
Cold In Place (CIP) Recycling was a new technology introduced in the early 1990’s in Ontario.
Fog sealing is generally a light application of spray applied slow set emulsion.
Tack Coat is a spray applied emulsion which provides a thin adhesive film of asphalt between existing road pavement and a new surfacing layer.
Dense-graded cold mixed asphalt can be an economical alternative to traditionally hot mixed asphalt, especially in areas where there is a long distance to the nearest hot mix plant.
Specialized Cutback Asphalt and Asphalt Emulsions can be used to create a concrete foundation water proofing.
Applying driveway sealer to an asphalt driveway will improve both aesthetics and lifespan of your asphalt driveway.
