APPLICATIONS
Western Asphalt Products have a variety of applications, some of which are listed below click on the application to see details and photos.

Seal Coats are treatments that provide effective pavement maintenance to all structurally sound roadways.
The application of a bituminous binder, followed immediately by a cover aggregate, produce a durable, flexible, low cost bituminous driving surface. Seal Coats can be separated into two categories: Chip Seal or Graded Seal.
Chip Seals may be applied to existing surface treatments such as hot mix asphalt, gravel or concrete. Chip Seals help to regain skid resistance on polished surfaces, prevent aggregate loss and rejuvenate oxidized surfaces, which extends the pavement’s life cycle.
Graded Seal can be applied over a granular surface as a double high float system in order to upgrade a roadway to a hard surface; this eliminates dust emissions, and provides a durable driving surface. Graded Seal Coats are also used on lower traffic roadways ( less than 1500 AADT).
These treatments can be opened to traffic shortly after placement, which reduces construction time and lessens user delays when compared to conventional pavement treatments.
Seal Coats are constructed using a variety of asphalt emulsions and cover aggregate combinations to produce a surface for varying traffic loads. With a solid base, a well-constructed Seal Coat increases the life cycle of the road, enabling the asset owner to further benefit from a low cost alternative to other wearing surfaces.
To significantly reduce maintenance costs of a roadway, double seals can provide public and private sectors with an effective product capable of lasting up to 10 years.

Microsurfacing is a thin cold-mix overlay used in the repair and preventative maintenance of roadways.
Microsurfacing consists of 100% manufactured aggregate, Portland Cement, water, liquid additives and a polymer-modified asphalt emulsion. The exact proportion of each component varying according to the specific mix-design.Microsurfacing is versatile and may be used for increased skid resistance, rut filling, longitudinal and transverse crack repair, levelling, and filling of small potholes. Further, Microsurfacing may be used in the correction of any roadway from highways and runways to city streets and parking lots.
Microsurfacing is also a quick set product and accepting of traffic after only 1 hour of application.

Fog sealing is generally a light application of spray applied slow set emulsion.
Fog sealing can be applied to a newly constructed roadway, to protectfrom early loss of aggregate.
Fog sealing also gives the surface a black appearance which is often requested by the customer and public.
Fog Coating is an application of a diluted asphalt emulsion to an aged (oxidized) pavement surface. Fog Coats are a standalone low-cost pavement preservation applications used to rejuvenate asphalt surfaces, seal small cracks and inhibit raveling. Fog Coats are commonly used on older asphaltic roads and cold mix pavements.

Tack Coat is a spray applied emulsion which provides a thin adhesive film of asphalt between existing road pavement and a new surfacing layer.
This layer of “Tack” reduces the risk of slippage between the layers of pavement and allows stresses to be distributed uniformly throughout the layers. Tack coats are especially necessary for thin and ultra-thin hot mix overlays. Most Tack Coats can be applied both ambient and elevated temperatures. Dilution with water for easier applications is also a common practice.

Western Canada has many kilometers of gravel roads, many of which require dust suppression to meet the publics expectations.
Specialized Asphalt Emulsions can be spray applied directly to gravel roads coating the dust particles, after the initial treatment the road can be maintained with a grader without total loss of the dust control treatment. If the treatment is applied to the same surface multiple times each time the application rate may be reduced, since the residual asphalt content from earlier applications remains in the road. Asphalt Emulsion treatments once cured will not leach or wash away from the road.

Prime coat products such as MC-30 and IEP-1 are designed to penetrate, bond, stabilize, water proof and promote adhesion between the base course and a new asphalt layer.
SS-1 is also used in many areas due to environmental concerns and availability on the jobsite however it must be graded into the base to meet some provinces specifications.

Cold In Place (CIP) Recycling was a new technology introduced in the early 1990’s in Ontario. Since then CIP has turned into a mature market in Ontario and is widely accepted as a routine method during a full reconstruction when the road has deteriorated past the point of preventative road maintenance.
CIP Recycling uses up to 80% less energy and produces 50% less in green house gas emissions then a typical mill and fill approach.
CIP is also an economical solution to a standard mill and fill overlay. CIP can significantly reduce Government Budgets by 100% recycling in place, there is no need for trucks to haul the asphalt millings off site and replace the road surface with 100% brand new aggregate, asphalt cement and increased labour/ equipment use.
CIP:
- Reduces Government Budgets
- Recycles 100% In Place Asphalt Cement/ Aggregate
- Supports Sustainability for Future Generations
- Reduces Depleting Gravel and Petroleum Reserves
- Has a proven 22 year successful history in Canada with our Climate Conditions
- Uses HF-150S, CSS-1H or HF-150P as an emulsion Binder.
- Engineered Mix Designs Specific for each Road
If reducing construction costs and reducing carbon emissions are some of your purchasing agencies goals then please contact Western Asphalt Products for a one on one Presentation about the benefits of CIP Recycling.

Dense-Graded Cold Mix
Dense-graded cold mixed asphalt can be an economical alternative to traditionally hot mixed asphalt, especially in areas where there is a long distance to the nearest hot mix plant. The process can be used to produce mixtures suitable for base course or wearing course using continuously graded virgin aggregate mixtures. Mixtures may beused shortly after manufacture or stockpiled for several days before use.
Open-Graded Cold Mix
Open-graded cold mixes are prepared from medium-setting emulsions containing sufficient solvent to give deferred set characteristics with open graded aggregate mixtures normally containing less than 2% less than 75 µm fines. The compacted materials have initial void contents of 15-25%. Applications include base and surface courses on low volume roadways, patching, reinstatement, profiling and repair of shoulders. Depending on the choice of solvent in the medium-setting emulsions, the mixes may be laid immediately in mix-paving operations, laid a few hours after production or be stockpiled for weeks or months. Similar Materials can be prepared from semi-dense gradings with 2-5% minus 75micron material, which have about 10-12% voids in the compacted mix. Reclaimed asphalt pavement is sometimes included in the mixture.

Specialized Cutback Asphalt and Asphalt Emulsions can be used to create a concrete foundation water proofing.
These products can be spray applied or rolled on to cement to create a water proof asphalt layer. Typical applications are
- Foundation walls
- Retaining walls
- Footings

Applying driveway sealer to an asphalt driveway will improve both aesthetics and lifespan of your asphalt driveway.
Life span will be improved by the driveway sealers ability to help prevent oxidation, fill small cracks and prevent water and ice from penetrating minor imperfections in your driveway. Methods of application vary depending on the product and include Squeegee, roller and spray applied.
